Based on Section 4 of the Statutes Governing the Non-profit Status and Use of the Münchner Stadtmuseum in conjunction with Art. 56(2) of the Bavarian Municipal Code and Art. 35(2) of the Bavarian Administrative Procedure Act, we have issued the following

Münchner Stadtmuseum Visitor Regulations

Preamble:

These visitor regulations are intended to ensure that all guests enjoy a pleasant experience at the museum. They serve to protect both our visitors and the museum’s buildings, grounds, and the objects on display.

Scope:

The following regulations shall apply to all buildings and outdoor areas of the Münchner Stadtmuseum, operated by the Bavarian State City of Munich, with the exception of the Von Parish Costume Library.

Please note: The museum is under video surveillance.

  1. These visitor regulations are binding for all visitors to the Münchner Stadtmuseum. By entering the museum grounds, visitors agree to comply with these rules.

  2. Visitors are required to conduct themselves in a manner
    • that does not obstruct or inconvenience others,
    • that does not put artworks and furnishings at risk of damage, harm, or destruction,
    • that does not violate security and the Geman Free Democratic Basic Order
  3. To ensure the safety of all visitors, the museum reserves the right to close all or part of its premises in the event of high visitor numbers or other justified circumstances.

  4. Access to areas designated for museum staff is strictly limited to authorized personnel.

  5. Escape routes, passageways, and stairways must remain unobstructed at all times. In the event of an emergency, only the designated escape routes may be used. Any misuse of safety equipment (e.g., emergency call buttons, emergency door releases) is strictly prohibited.

  7. Please be considerate of others when using mobile phones in the exhibition areas.

  8. Children under the age of six may enter the exhibition areas only when accompanied by an adult. Accompanying adults are responsible for the conduct of children and young people in their care (duty of supervision). Parents or accompanying persons are liable for any damage caused by unsupervised minors, in accordance with applicable legal provisions.

  9. Photography for private use is generally permitted in exhibition areas, provided it does not infringe on the rights of third parties. Visitors must respect the personal rights of other guests, museum staff, and security personnel. The use of flash photography, tripods, and selfie sticks is prohibited. Photography for commercial, scientific, or journalistic purposes is only permitted with prior written approval from the Münchner Stadtmuseum, following submission of the appropriate application.

  10. Filming is only permitted with the prior written consent of the Münchner Stadtmuseum. Please submit your application to our Communications Department.

  11. Touching collection objects on open display is not permitted. Additionally, they must avoid handling items near the exhibits that could potentially cause damage. Visitors are liable for any damage they cause, in accordance with applicable legal provisions.

  12. For conservation reasons, the use of any lighting devices - such as flashlights or smartphone lights - is not permitted in the exhibition areas.

  13. Animals are not permitted inside the museum building. On museum grounds (outdoor areas), animals must be kept on a leash.
    • This restriction does not apply to certified guide or assistance dogs.
    • Any soiling caused by animals must be cleaned up by the handler.
  14. Consumption of food and beverages is not allowed in exhibition and event spaces, including the movie theatre and lobby. Smoking, including electronic cigarettes, and the consumption of cannabis are prohibited throughout the museum buildings and its outdoor areas (including courtyards).

  15. All rooms and public areas must be kept clean. Sanitary facilities and areas must be used appropriately. Writing, painting, affixing materials to, or moving any structural elements, furnishings, or other installations is strictly prohibited without prior permission.

  16. Sitting, lying down, or sleeping on the floors of the museum, including stairwells and outdoor areas, is not permitted.

  17. The use of inline skates, skateboards, scooters, or similar devices is prohibited in both indoor and outdoor areas of the museum. The use of any vehicle on museum premises requires prior written consent. Bicycles must be parked in the designated bicycle racks.

  18. For safety reasons, luggage, strollers, and similar items must not be left unattended at any time.

  19. Museum tours are typically conducted by Münchner Stadtmuseum staff or authorized guides. External tour groups must register in advance with the Münchner Stadtmuseum (Cultural Education Department booking service).

  20. All commercial activity on museum property is prohibited without prior written authorization. Advertising, distributing flyers, handbills, samples, or similar promotional materials is generally not allowed. Exceptions require the prior written consent of the Münchner Stadtmuseum’s Communications Department.

  21. Items found on museum premises must be handed over to security staff.

  22. Media equipment such as audio guides or tour guide systems must be returned to security staff immediately after your visit. These items may not be taken outside the museum premises.

  23. The museum management, represented by the staff of the Münchner Stadtmuseum, exercises full proprietary rights. Security and supervisory personnel are authorized to enforce these regulations. Visitors must follow all instructions issued by museum staff to ensure visitor safety and the protection of exhibits. Failure to comply with the visitor regulations or the instructions given by the supervisory staff may result in exclusion from the museum.

  24. Serious violations of these guidelines may result in immediate expulsion from the museum and may lead to criminal prosecution. Such violations include: possession or consumption of illegal drugs, cannabis, or alcohol (outside designated catering areas); bringing weapons or other dangerous objects; threats or use of physical violence; wilful damage to property, theft, vandalism or disorderly conduct; abusive or insulting behavior; hate-speech – including racist, sexist, anti-LGBTIQ*, anti-Semitic remarks or content that glorifies violence; defacement of the buildings or outdoor areas, and begging.

  25. These regulations take effect the day after their initial publication. They will also be available on the Münchner Stadtmuseum website.
