Münchner Stadtmuseum

The Münchner Stadtmuseum was founded in 1888. Today, it is Germany’s largest municipal museum, home to nine very diverse collections, including the Münchner Filmmuseum and the Von Parish Costume Library. The extensive site of this historic museum can only really be appreciated from the air from which views of its two spacious interior courtyards can be seen framed by six distinctive buildings.

The Münchner Stadtmuseum is currently undergoing an extensive renovation and refurbishment program so as to make it fit for the future. The museum closed its doors to the public in January 2024 and is scheduled to reopen in 2031. In the meantime, until 2027, “What the City. Perspectives of Munich” will be on display in the historic armory. The Münchner Stadtmuseum’s Filmmuseum will continue to offer a varied movie program until summer 2027.

Despite the closure, the Münchner Stadtmuseum continues to carry out its core activities of collection, conservation, research, exhibiting and communication. The team is hard at work reimagining the permanent and special exhibitions and curating an interim program both online and at various venues across the city. When it reopens in 2031, the museum hopes to be a central hub where people can come together and learn about, reflect on and discuss the past, present and future of Munich and the people who live here.
