Culinary cultures across the generations

The Project Insights series showcases the Münchner Stadtmuseum’s ongoing research into migration in Munich past and present. This latest display presents its findings on how migrants have influenced the city’s culinary culture over the course of more than 100 years.

Munich boasts a large selection of international restaurants, cafés and snack bars. This diverse assortment of food and restaurants from around the world has been and still is pioneered primarily by migrants, who bring all manner of different cuisines to Munich and finetune them to local tastes. These culinary establishments have always played a major role in forging a new style of urban living in Munich.

The “Mezze, stir-fry and gelato. Culinary cultures across the generations” Project Insight uses three very different foreign cuisines to cast a spotlight on places such as these, which are seen not merely as purveyors of a diverse array of international foods but as veritable melting pots of identity and cultural interaction.

To accompany the display, Stadtarchiv München (Munich City Archives) and the Münchner Stadtmuseum have produced a joint publication that explores how migrants have influenced Munich’s culinary culture. This third volume in the “Münchner Beiträge zur Migrationsgeschichte” (Munich’s Contributions to the History of Migration) series is edited by Dr. Vivienne Marquart and Clara Sterzinger-Killermann.

Our first event takes a brand-new format – a
Meet ‘n’ Eat evening on Thursday, October 10, 2019 at 7.00 pm.
Organized by the Münchner Stadtmuseum, this event combines international catering with the opportunity for participants to discuss not just the food, but a wide variety of other issues.

The curator will give a brief guided tour of the Project Insight as part of the “Long Night of Munich Museums” on October 19, 2019 at 8.45 pm

The closing event and launch of the publication accompanying the Project Insight will take place on April 29, 2020 at 7.00 pm.
