Quirky Art Nouveau. Carl Strathmann

The highly original and fabulously bizarre art of Carl Strathmann (1866-1939) resists any kind of pigeonholing. This Art Nouveau painter, who boasted an ornate style and a fastidious obsession with detail, lovingly fashioned his own unique worlds from fairy-tale caricature figures, fantastical floral still lifes and landscapes, symbolist history paintings and art-and-craft designs.

Migration Moves the City – Changing Perspectives

Migration is normal in a growing city and as much a part of Munich as is Marienplatz. Brickmakers from Italy’s Friuli region, who produced the construction materials for many typical Munich buildings, “displaced persons” who helped just as much with re-building the city after World War II as other groups, and “guest workers,” who made key contributions to industrial production and urban development have all left their marks on Munich’s culture and daily life.

Project: Archäologie München

More than 250 archaeological digs have been carried out in Munich’s old town alone. What happens to the artifacts once they are excavated? The major excavations in Marienhof Square in 2011/2012 prompted a number of state and municipal actors of to set up the "Archäologie München" working group which operates under the aegis of the Archaeological Collection of the Bavarian State.

Revolutionary and State Premier – Kurt Eisner (1867-1919)

To mark the 150th birthday of Kurt Eisner, Bavaria’s first State Premier, the Münchner Stadtmuseum has mounted an exhibition that examines his journalistic and political career. His personality divides opinion as much today as it did during his lifetime. While some dismiss him as an idealist and utopian, others celebrate him as progressive and a man of action.

SOUNDLAB.1 – The Museum Goes Audible

The Music Collection as a "sound laboratory": In the Soundlab, an array of interactive exhibits encourages visitors to experiment with sound and acoustics: for example, by trying out a slit drum, a "xylonator" or the "stamping tubes."
