FotoDoks: ACHTUNG?! – Respect, Control, Change

Over the past five years, FotoDoks has established itself as one of the most important festivals for documentary photography in the German-speaking countries. The Münchner Stadtmuseum is now hosting the FotoDoks festival exhibition for a second time, after showings in Bad Aibling and the temporary cultural centre of Puerto Giesing.

The ‘ACHTUNG?! – Respect, Control, Change’ exhibition brings together 15 extraordinary photographers from Great Britain, this year’s FotoDok partner country, as well as photographers from Germany, Austria and Switzerland. It is a display of photographic points of view that illustrate the different current esthetic approaches and topics in documentary photography, developing this year’s festival topic from a variety of perspectives.

The festival is independent from the conventions of the print media and art scene, and provides a forum to examine the motivations and production conditions of the photographers and the interests of clients or consumers. The festival week of October 17 – 21, 2012, will provide the opportunity to identify and discuss contemporary issues in documentary photography surrounding the keywords of respect, control and change: What is the photographer’s responsibility to his or her medium and protagonists? What constitutes a worthy topic? Who controls the image? How does the image control the world? Who calls the attention of whom?

In addition to the exhibiting photographers, invitations have been extended to other international guests to further enrich the extensive festival program of lectures, discussion panels, workshop discussions, movies and presentations.
