Plastic Art

Alongside particularly valuable pieces such as Erasmus Grasser's Morris Dancers and the heroic putti figures from the Marian Column on Marienplatz square, the collection contains major wooden sculptures from the Baroque and Rococo eras including works by Ignaz Günther (1725-1775) and Johann Baptist Straub (1704-1784). Munich in the 19th century is represented by the bronzes of Johann Baptist Stiglmaier (1791-1844), Ferdinand von Miller (1813-1887) and Ludwig Schwanthaler (1802-1848). The collection also extends from an impressive compilation of busts – testifying to the cult of erecting monuments during the 19th century – through to small bronzes from the Art Nouveau era, 1920s and 1930s.
