Collection appeal
The Münchner Stadtmuseum, the Stadtarchiv München (Munich City Archives) and Forum Queeres Archiv München e.V. - LesBiSchwulTransInter* in Geschichte und Kultur (lesbians and gays in history and culture) have jointly launched an appeal to collect objects and documents relating to Munich City’s LGBTI+ history, past and present.
The Münchner Stadtmuseum and Stadtarchiv München are, in a sense, the city’s cultural and material memory, displaying many different facets of Munich’s development and multiple cultures. By opening up their collections to more recent issues affecting Munich’s diverse urban society, they are breaking new ground. Themes such as migration, people living on the edge, mobility and LGBTI+ issues have not featured prominently in urban documentation heretofore.
For this reason, we are particularly happy on this occasion to work in partnership with Forum Queeres Archiv München e.V., which has, for almost 20 years now, devoted its archiving and networking energies to LGBTI+ issues. It is our intention to cooperate closely, further develop and professionalize the Munich LGBTI+ history collection, and expand and organize our collection of records and objects. Our goal is to curate the history of the Munich LGBTI+ community and display it as an intrinsic part of Munich city life in all its diversity.
Documenting and visualizing LGBTI+ history
We would welcome loans or donations of personal mementos and everyday items, photos, video and audio recordings, flyers, leaflets, posters, stickers, transparencies, banners, invitations, admission tickets, diaries, clothing and any other records and objects which have been and continue to be significant to the life of the LGBTI+ communities and the lesbian-feminist women’s movement in Munich.
In addition to private possessions, we are interested in objects and records documenting the development of the LGBTI+ communities and the work of associations, centers, initiatives and networks in Munich. We would also like to receive documentation which enables us to visualize bars, shops and other important places which have been and continue to be important for this scene.
