Collection Area #3: Books, Rare Publications, Magazines
Ever since it was first established as a Photography Museum in 1963, our Photography Collection has maintained its own specialist library that has grown to become one of the most important of its kind. It comprises over 25,000 titles spanning the entire period from the beginnings of photography right up to the present day. They include books and catalogs, rare publications, magazines and journals, auction catalogs and a separate library devoted to the history of photographic technology. Other key themes include early nude photography, early photography from the US, and stereo photography. The library is being expanded through new acquisitions on a continuous basis. It is divided into a study collection and a rare publications section, which contains particularly rare and valuable printed matter. Both of which may be viewed in person by prior arrangement. However, the library will be closed to the public until further notice due to the museum’s ongoing refurbishment.
