Collection Area #2: Archives, Gifts and Bequests, Special Collections

The largest area of our Photography Collection comprises probably over two million items if we include negatives. It is made up of some 40 individual collections either purchased by or donated to the museum. Sources include image archives of Quick magazine and Hanns Reich Verlag, Deutscher Kunstverlag and Kunstverlag Franz Hanfstaengl, all publishing houses. We have also received various gifts and bequests, mostly from German photographers such as Hubs Flöter, Franz Grainer, Karl Hubbuch, Philipp Kester, Hermann Landshoff, Helmut Lederer, Herbert List, Barbara Lüdecke, Stefan Moses, Floris Neusüss, Elfriede Reichelt, Erich Retzlaff, Regina Relang, Renata Riederer, Dimitri Soulas, Vladimir Vinski, and Jo von Kalckreuth. Our Photography Collection is also home to several special collections including the Dietmar Siegert collection of 19th century German photography, the Uwe Scheid (photographica) collection and the Begatik and Breitenbach collections. The prints and negatives held in this area are often accompanied by background material such as handwritten and printed documents.
